Autism Treatment – The Typical Treatment for Autism

Autism Treatment – The Typical Treatment for Autism

Autism Treatment – Typical treatments for Autism include the FDA approved medication called Risperdal as well as non medical treatments such as speech therapy, occupational therapy and, in younger children, applied behavioral analysis (ABA). Biomedical autism intervention specialist physician, Dr. Kurt Woeller, explains.

I want to discuss some typical ways that Autism is treated. Now it is well known that there are various types of services that are available for people on the Autism spectrum. Some therapies for young children include applied behavioral analysis or ABA therapy, speech therapy as well as occupational therapy which could provide help in areas of motor function like gross motor function and fine motor function. There are other therapy modalities as well such as horse therapy and others that provide environmental stimuli for children with Autism.

As we see these children grow and become teenagers and adults, we recognize that many of these services can still be beneficial and necessary. But what we may also see is a restriction in access to some of these therapies and services as the children get older. Access to some of these programs like ABA, speech and occupational therapy is implemented through the local school districts. So for many states across the country, where you live can make a difference in the services that you will receive. And for adults on the Autism spectrum it can be even more challenging to find good therapy options. Placement of individuals with Autism in homes or in institutions can be common along with the use of medications to help moderate behavioral issues.

Most of the medications that have been used traditionally to treat Autism focus on the management of some of the problem behaviors found in Autism. There is one FDA approved medication for the treatment of Autism and it is called Risperdal. It is used specifically to address some of the aberrant, antisocial and aggressive behaviors that many individuals with Autism tend to exhibit. I have seen the use of SSRI medications like Prozac, Paxil and Zoloft used as well to help stabilize mood in children, teens and adults with Autism. But the main FDA approved medication is Risperdal. So you can see how limited we are from a medications standpoint. Then the non medical therapies remain as viable options to address some of the issues we see with social interaction, behavior<img src="http://www.articlesfactory.com/pic/x.gif" alt="Science Articles" border="0", and language in Autism.

School Principal Discovers Effective Supplement For Kids With Concentration Problems

For Dallas elementary school principal Denise Hampton, the miraculous journey that was about to unfold started with her niece Ashley’s concentration problems in school.

Ashley, who was ten years old at the time, was having the same problem that many kids her age experience in school: lack of focus and concentration. Far too often, kids with these issues are hastily labeled with ADD or Attention Deficit Disorder. Ashley’s fate, however, was taking a turn for the better.

Hampton was exploring therapy options for her niece when a Dallas physician suggested a new class of nutrients called glyconutrients. Hampton found that these nutrients provide the body with eight special sugars called monosaccharides.

She also discovered that mainstream science had validated these newly discovered sugars as absolutely necessary for the healthy functioning of the body. Without these sugars in the diet, a variety of health issues cold arise including poor concentration.

For Hampton, the clincher was research showing that these special sugars are rarely found in kid’s (or adult’s) diets. She reasoned that if these nutrients were added to her niece’s diet, then perhaps she would see a change in Ashley’s behavior.

Hampton ordered some of the supplements and started Ashley on them right away. She didn’t have to wait long. Within two weeks, Ashley began to show obvious improvements in her ability to focus and concentrate. Over the following weeks it became even more evident something very special was happening. Not only were Ashley’s powers of concentration increasing but remarkably, so were her grades.

Seeing such obvious changes in her niece, it occurred to Hampton that similar transformations might also be possible in some of the other students in her school. It was known to Hampton that many of the kids in her school had learning and concentration difficulties and that a number of them were on prescription medications.

Having seen such a remarkable turnaround in Ashley, she wondered what would happen if she could get some of the more difficult kids in her school on the same glyconutritional regimen.

As luck would have it, Hampton made a connection with a charitable group that provides glyconutritional supplements to disadvantaged children around the world. Working with this group (Manna Relief), as well as with parents and medical professionals, Hampton’s dream of providing these supplements to some of Ashley’s classmates became a reality.

It wasn’t long before a large group of kids in Ashley’s school with severe learning and emotional disabilities were started on a glyconutritional regimen. As Hampton predicted, within two weeks, she and her staff began to see positive changes. Not only were these kids focusing better but they were also retaining information more fully and becoming more emotionally stable.

As the kids continued their glyconutritional regimen, an unexpected side benefit occurred: the school’s poor academic standing climbed to one of the highest in the state of Texas.

Hampton has no doubt that these supplements are playing a pivotal role in helping kids to excel in their studies. Based on everything she’s seen, Hampton believes that parents would greatly increase their kid’s chances of success at school by providing them with these remarkable supplements.

Contracting with Your Abuser

How can one negotiate with an abuser without incurring his wrath? What is the meaning of contracts “signed” with bullies? How can one motivate the abuser to keep his end of the bargain – for instance, to actually seek therapy and attend the sessions? And how efficacious is psychotherapy or counseling to start with?

It is useless to confront the abuser head on and to engage in power politics (“You are guilty or wrong, I am the victim and right”, “My will should prevail”, and so on). It is decidedly counterproductive and unhelpful and could lead to rage attacks and a deepening of the abuser’s persecutory delusions, bred by his humiliation in the therapeutic setting. Better, at first, to co-opt the abuser’s own prejudices and pathology by catering to his infantile emotional needs and complying with his wishes, complex rules and arbitrary rituals.

Here a practical guide how to drag your abuser into treatment and into a contract of mutual respect and cessation of hostilities (assuming, of course, you want to preserve the relationship):

1. Tell him that you love him and emphasize the exclusivity of your relationship by refraining, initially and during the therapy, from anxiety-provoking acts. Limiting your autonomy is a temporary sacrifice – under no circumstances make it a permanent feature of your relationship. Demonstrate to the abuser that his distrust of you is misplaced and undeserved and that one of the aims of the treatment regimen is to teach him to control and reduce his pathological and delusional jealousy.

2. Define areas of your common life that the abuser can safely – and without infringing on your independence – utterly control. Abusers need to feel that they are in charge, sole decision-makers and arbiters.

3. Ask him to define – preferably in writing – what he expects from you and where he thinks that you, or your “performance” are “deficient”. Try to accommodate his reasonable demands and ignore the rest. Do not, at this stage, present a counter-list. This will come later. To move him to attend couple or marital therapy, tell him that you need his help to restore your relationship to its former warmth and intimacy. Admit to faults of your own which you want “fixed” so as to be a better mate. Appeal to his narcissism and self-image as the omnipotent and omniscient macho. Humour him for a while.

4. Involve your abuser, as much as you can, in your life. Take him to meet your family, ask him to join in with your friends, to visit your workplace, to help maintain your car (a symbol of your independence), to advise you on money matters and career steps. Do not hand over control to him over any of these areas – but get him to feel a part of your life and try to mitigate his envy and insecurity.

5. Encourage him to assume responsibility for the positive things in his life and in your relationship. Compliment the beneficial outcomes of his skills, talents, hard work, and attitude. Gradually, he will let go of his alloplastic defences – his tendency to blame every mistake of his, every failure, or mishap on others, or on the world at large.

6. Make him own up to his feelings by identifying them. Most abusers are divorced from their emotions. They seek to explain their inner turmoil by resorting to outside agents (“look what you made me do” or “they provoked me”). They are unaware of their anger, envy, or aggression. Mirror your abuser gently and unobtrusively (“how do you feel about it?”, “when I am angry I act the same”, “would you be happier if I didn’t do it?”).

7. Avoid the appearance – or the practice – of manipulating your abuser (except if you want to get rid of him). Abusers are very sensitive to control issues and they feel threatened, exploited, and ill-treated when manipulated. They invariably react with violence.

8. Treat your abuser as you would like him to behave towards you. Personal example is a powerful proselytizer. Don’t act out of fear or subservience. Be sincere. Act out of love and conviction. Finally, your conduct is bound to infiltrate the abuser’s defenses.

9. React forcefully, unambiguously, and instantly to any use of force. Make clear where the boundary of civilized exchange lies. Punish him severely and mercilessly if he crosses it. Make known well in advance the rules of your relationship – rewards and sanctions included. Discipline him for verbal and emotional abuse as well – though less strenuously. Create a hierarchy of transgressions and a penal code to go with it.

Read these for further guidance:

Coping with Your Abuser

How to Cope with Your Abuser

10. As the therapy continues and progress is evident, try to fray the rigid edges of your sex roles. Most abusers are very much into “me Tarzan, you Jane” gender-casting. Show him his feminine sides and make him proud of them. Gradually introduce him to your masculine traits, or skills – and make him proud of you.

This, essentially, is what good therapists do in trying to roll back or limit the offender’s pathology.

From “Treatment Modalities and Therapies”:

“Most therapists try to co-opt the narcissistic abuser’s inflated ego (False Self) and defences. They compliment the narcissist, challenging him to prove his omnipotence by overcoming his disorder. They appeal to his quest for perfection, brilliance, and eternal love – and his paranoid tendencies – in an attempt to get rid of counterproductive, self-defeating, and dysfunctional behaviour patterns.

By stroking the narcissist’s grandiosity, they hope to modify or counter cognitive deficits, thinking errors, and the narcissist’s victim-stance. They contract with the narcissist to alter his conduct. Some even go to the extent of medicalizing the disorder, attributing it to a hereditary or biochemical origin and thus “absolving” the narcissist from guilt and responsibility and freeing his mental resources to concentrate on the therapy.”

But is therapy worth the effort? What is the success rate of various treatment modalities in modifying the abuser’s conduct, let alone in “healing” or “curing” him?

Serial Killers Psychology

<img src="http://www.buzzle.com/img/articleImages/331874-1971-29.jpg" width="244" height="350" alt="Serial Killers Psychology" class="ImgBorder"

The serial killers psychology is far beyond the grasp of normal human understanding. Though they are mentally sick, they themselves are not totally responsible for what they are, there are various other contributing factors. And they are as…

A serial killer is a person who murders 3 or more people, in a particular fashion, in a gap of few days. What gives the serial killers their name is the symmetricity of their modus operandi. There is always something common in the murders like, the use of a particular weapon, the race of the people killed, their age, gender, their profession and sometimes even the graffiti on the body of the victim. The basis of the motives have mostly been some psychological disorder, which wasn’t identified until it was too late. More or less the motive has always consisted an element of hatred and fear, which have their roots in the killer’s childhood. It is hard to believe that a person can kill for sexual favors, and can have unbelievable intentions like necrophilia and cannibalism.

Power has always been the center of a serial killer’s thinking. These people are seriously obsessed with being in a position of power, be it sexually or in general life. They somehow like the feeling of being in charge and they will go to any extent, to make sure they are. This psychology branches from the background of child abuse, neglect and low self esteem. The children who grow up with a feeling of being unwanted and unloved, tend to become very violent and assertive in their adult life. And sometimes, this low self esteem and rejection finds a wrong vent in brutally murdering innocent people. These people being shy as kids have vivid imaginations, mostly violent and when in a position, they get obsessed with living their imaginations. It is really hard to imagine what goes on in a sick mind and is totally shocking when this sick mind goes ahead and makes it all come true, no matter what.

The victims of serial killers are physically weaker than them. The most favorite targets being children (both boys and girls) and women. There have been a few serial killers who targeted old people and a very few who targeted middle-aged men. Even infants have paid with their lives for being born to a poor family or sometimes just for being born. Women and children have paid with their lives for the satisfaction of a sick mind’s wild imagination. Most have been killed for sexual favors, and the worst is, many have been killed for their body parts, that were supposedly tasty. A few killers killed for financial gains also and lot many lives have been sacrificed in the name of God and Devil equally. Yes, there have been serial killers, who in their confession said that God/Devil guided them to kill a person and sometimes even to eat their particular organs or drink their blood, etc, etc. Oh God, I am sick of even writing this and I don’t know how some people did this. I mean can you imagine living in a house with a dead body. When we normal people cannot even imagine all this without getting goose bumps, think what goes in the mind of a serial killer who has done all this and actually finds pleasure in this. There have been cases where a person lived with dead bodies and treated them as his family. This case shows serious problem of low self esteem, caused due to rejection. That person was so scared of rejection that he thought of keeping dead people around him, who can be controlled easily or say, who need not be controlled at all, who didn’t have their opinions and took the killer as their master, without resistance.

So, I can safely say that a serial killer’s psyche is mostly based on a background of abuse; both mental and (physical) sexual and misplaced morals mixed with a high or very low IQ. Some of the serial killers have had an IQ of 152 and they have been always found to be standing on the borderline between sanity and insanity. They come from all walks of life, from a successful mathematician to a mechanic, they have all been there and done that.

Psychology of Serial Killers – Background
Are serial killers psychopaths? Yes most of them are. A psychopath is a person who doesn’t believe in social norms, and ethical principles and is generally antisocial. These people seem to have strange set of morals and logics in life. It has been ascertained that their characteristics are very shallow, are charming, very impulsive, have criminal ways of thinking, are violent and abusive and show all of these traits from a very early age. Serial killers are known to gain satisfaction through their behavior.

The records of hundreds of serial killers indicate child abuse. Most of the serial killers are known to have suffered both mental and physical (sexual) abuse in their childhood and many a times the culprits being their own parents (incest). Absence of family morals, sometimes, even the absence of a proper functioning family, has lead to severely low esteemed children, who grew up to be mentally sick. Of all the abuses that a serial killer at some point of time suffered himself, rejection tops the chart. A few of them were born to prostitutes or teen-aged unmarried mothers and had to face situations pathetic enough to make them hate whole of the human race.

All in all, serial killers have a background of abusive parents, ignored childhood on account of a dysfunctional family, totally displaced moral values, extremely low self esteem and a seriously wrong concept of life and the working of the society. Many psychologists have observed that a proper family would have saved these killers from becoming what they came to be. Most of them have had an IQ of a genius but lacked a direction, ending up in a mess and moreover history stands evidence to the fact, that people with extraordinary IQs have eventually lost their minds and ended up being total freak shows and a threat to the society.

Serial Killers Psychology – Adult Life
The adult life of a serial killer is mostly filled with failures. Failures at personal level are common because, who can cope up with a serial killer and if somebody does, he or she has always ended up being the first victim. A serial killer can never have a properly functioning family because most of them don’t know what it means. The history of all known serial killers is filled with failed marriages and love affairs. They even fail at pursuing a career. Their minds are just not made to work hard and make a career. They can’t work under someone because they want power, they are known to generally misbehave at their workplace, leading to being fired. Their short temper follows them everywhere, leading to general misbehavior and violence with coworkers. These people also get bored very easily. A monotonous 9-5 job can never satisfy them. They need thrill in their life, which they find in all the wrong places. There has been a mathematician who became a serial killer from being the head of the department of a well-known American University. This man suddenly wanted to save earth, using all means. He quit his normal life, started living in a cottage which had no running water and electricity. There he started making bombs which were used to injure and kill a few of his university colleagues for no apparent reason. And it is still not known why and how these people contradicted the project of saving earth. Read more on ‘List of Famous Serial Killers’.

A serial killer keeps showing the symptoms of being mentally sick, all his life. But most of the symptoms go unnoticed for some reason or the other. One major reason being, solitary isolation. And this reason is very logical because cohabitation with a serial killer is impossible. For normal people to agree with the ideologies of a serial killer is tough and a serial killer will never agree with the normal people, hence, ruling out the possibilities of having a friend or foe, who will be around to notice if something’s wrong.

Till the date, all the serial killers have had friends who were equally psycho’s and agreed with their way of life. All the accomplices of the serial killers had a serial killer psychology themselves and helped the serial killer directly or indirectly. There have been cases where all an accomplice did was find the victims, rest everything; torture, rape, murder, etc., was done by the killer, and they stood by, enjoying the process.

Though at a different level, these people can be considered equally sick and the laws have always punished them equally. In some cases, the accomplices have given verdicts against the killer and saved themselves from the death penalty, but the laws made sure that they never walked out of the prisons, alive. Till date all the accomplices have served at least one life imprisonment. There are many who have got multiple life sentences and will never step out of the prison, not at least for next 200 years.

Serial Killers Psychology – Angels of Mercy: Women Serial Killers
Women have achieved everything that a man can achieve socially, so why not the status of a serial killer. A female serial killer is termed as angel of mercy, because by far mercy is what they have done while killing, at least they themselves thought so. There have been cases of women working as nurses, housewives, cooks, etc., murdering people for their profits. With women, it has mostly been about financial gains and profits. Women have murdered their husbands and children, so as to acquire their insurance money. Women working as nurses have killed for unknown reasons as well as financial gains. Even women working as cooks have killed their masters after influencing them to change their wills. Poisoning is the most commonly used method of killing by the angels of mercy. Some women are known to have killed as many as 7 husbands and respective kids, just so, that they can get some money from the insurance policies, taken for the deceased.

Thinking of women, in this role is tough, but yes there have been cases. Women have also been accomplices to male serial killers. There are many well known cases where a woman, who is a girlfriend or wife of the killer has helped him with his gross chores. So people, even women can be inhuman, I know it’s hard to imagine but it’s logical that even they suffer from mental disorders. As compared to men, women or say a girl child is more prone to abuse and violence, leading to a disturbed personality with a lot of hatred hidden in some deep corners of the mind. Most of the times, all they need is a little provocation and they become monstrous themselves or an accomplice to a monster. So, now you have more reasons to be afraid. Apart from men, you have to be careful about some very beautiful and strangely affectionate women. For more information on serial killer psychology, you may always refer to Hollywood.

Serial Killers Psychology – Theories
The work and research of many psychologists, over many decades, gave way to a few theories, that suggest some common traits of the serial killers. One of the most famous one being the MacDonald Triad. The Macdonald Triad defines a combination of three symptoms, that are mostly found in all the serial killers. It consists of three behavioral characteristics that are straightaway associated with sociopathic behavior. These were coined by JM Macdonald, a forensic psychiatrist, in a 1963 paper in the American Journal of Psychiatry, called ‘The Threat to Kill’. The characteristics described by him are:
Cruelty to animals.
Obsession with fire.
Bed wetting past the age of 5.
According to the statistics, the childhood history of these 3 characteristics has been found in most of the serial killers. These symptoms mentioned in the triad being the outcome of parental neglect and abuse, have in one or the other way lead to overly shy and reserved kids, who grew up to become violent adults with their own strange concepts of life. Read more on ‘Sociopath Vs Psychopath’.

A serial killer is often confirmed of suffering from at least one psychological disorder. But a person can always suffer from more than one, which is mostly the case. A few observed serial killer psychological disorders are:
Schizophrenia
Multiple personality disorder
Antisocial personality disorder
Anxiety disorder
Bipolar disorder
Borderline personality disorder
Childhood antisocial disorder
Delusional disorder
Depression
Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
Obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD)
Physical abuse
Panic attack
Pedophilia
Personality disorder
Psychotic disorder
Sexual sadism
and so on. Really, the list of disorders these people suffer from is endless. More or less all the symptoms are related to each other and in most cases, one condition leads to the other.

Serial Killer Psychology – Motives
The motives of serial killers have been many till date. If I compile a list of all the motives discovered till now, it will look something like this:
Sexual favors
Sexual sadism
Pedophilia
Financial gains
Racism
Fun
Pleasure
Thrill
The last three motives are real, and they truly define the mental condition of a serial killer. For a normal person it is hard to even think of death and fun together but for a serial killer it is easy to accomplish. Motive or no motive, killing a person for any reason other than self defense, is a criminal offense and killing a number of people serially, is a serial crime and is most often punished serially, with a series of life terms or direct death penalty.

Jokes apart, hanging a serial killer is not a solution. Hanging one has never stopped the next one. The solution to this probably lies in providing a healthy childhood to every kid, no matter which family or society he is born in, because most of the problems of a serial killer have their roots in his childhood and some in his genetics. But providing a healthy childhood to everyone is easier said than done. All we can do is just hope that every grown up fulfills his responsibilities properly and brings up his children with a stable and healthy mind. So, can we say a serial killer is the result of a corrupt and immoral society and that to curb the making of a serial killer in the future, we have to start with cleaning and mending our own morals?

Detecting a serial killer and understanding a serial killer psychology in a crowd of millions, is impossible, but it is in our hands to build a society where people respect each other, irrespective of their colors, a society where parents provide their children with a childhood full of love and care and where every person is aware that life is precious. After all, a serial killer is a child, who didn’t understand what love is and how it feels to share it with others. And at some point or the other, it was and is the fault of the society.

Natural Remedies for ADHD Children

<img src="http://www.buzzle.com/img/articleImages/17128-53.jpg" width="350" height="233" alt="Natural Remedies for ADHD Children" class="ImgBorder"

What is ADHD?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a common problem in children that affects the nervous system of the target and render them to feel uneasy in all their ways of life. It makes the child to lose interest in whatever that happens in front of him or her. If left without care, the problem may persist in one’s adulthood too. Though proper parental guidance is the considered to be the best treatment for the disorder, some people have started preferring natural remedies for it.

Natural Remedies:

Diet based treatment

Considering the natural remedies for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, most of the people prefer dietary approaches since they do not bring side effect unlike other medicinal treatments. In addition, the body does not get affected health wise. It has been scientifically proved that the diet taken in by the people has direct relationships with the brain and the nervous system of the humans. Hence, change in the diet can bring about a change in the behavior too. The main case of the above condition is the allergies that certain ADHD affected children have towards certain food. Tests on some of the ADHD children have shown proof that these children are sensitive to certain food may directly or indirectly affect the child mentally. Though this has been proved only on a small percentage of the affected children, a large percentage of the children are highly sensitive to hard chemicals and drugs. This means that there is only a small possibility of such children getting medical treatments for their disorder. This in turn forces them to take up natural treatments and diet based treatments.

Among the diet based treatments for ADHD children the most common diet given to the patients is the Feingold diet. The basic idea is to provide a diet that is devoid of salicylates. Though it is very difficult to make the children to get use to this kind of diet, adapting to the diet can result in very good and positive effects. It contains a rich and natural diet though it lacks a bit in its nutritive value.

Another important point to note in the case of dietary treatment is the avoidance of the use of excess of sugar in the daily diet. Though it has been experimentally proven that a sugar rich diet does not have anything to do with hyperactivity, the carbohydrate content in sugar has the tendency to make the child sedate. Hence, people prefer to opt for a protein rich diet for the ADHD affected children. Usage of essential fatty acids in the daily diet can provide the necessary impulses for a better brain functionality. This can also have direct effects on the functioning of the nervous system.

Herbal treatment

Herbal treatment and other natural treatments like homeopathic treatments are also a good option to choose for ADHD. This, in general, does not have any kind of side effects and can be accurate and reliable in the cure of the disorder though it takes a longer time than usual. Some of the herbs used for the treatment are oral flower essence, pine extract, melatonin, ginkgo biloba etc. These herbs have slow but positive effects on the affected people. Ginseng is also used for certain attention deficit disorders. Though these are very reliable, they must not be taken unless there is proper guidance from an experienced medical practitioner. They should also be taken on proper quantities as prescribed by the doctor. Special care should be taken while the treatment is applied for small children.

These are some of the natural remedies for ADHD affected children.

Fish Oil for Children

<img src="http://www.buzzle.com/img/articleImages/341528-5922-20.jpg" width="350" height="233" alt="Fish Oil for Children" class="ImgBorder"

Fish oil being a great source of omega 3 essential fatty acids, its consumption surely has long term health benefits. The constituents in fish oil provide a healthy heart and are necessary for normal growth of the brain. Supplementing the diet with fish oil can help maintain normal vision and greatly reduce the risk of diseases such as colon and breast cancer. Read more on the beneficial effects of fish oil on the heart.

Fish Oil Benefits for Children

Nowadays, fish oil has also been prescribed for children to improve their overall mental health. Symptoms of certain respiratory disorders like asthma, have considerably reduced in children due to intake of fish oil supplements. Other benefits of fish oil for kids are given below:

Maximize Brain Function
Considered as brain food, fish oil for children is very much capable to optimize their brain function. It can maximize brain health and is especially useful in children with learning disorders. No wonder, fish oil supplements are referred as brain sharp capsules.

Increases Concentration Power
Lack of concentration in any activity can hinder the progress of the child. Many children also complain about lowered concentration level while studying. However, intake of fish oil in the prescribed dosage can boost concentration in children.

Improves Memory
This is another reason why doctors recommend fish oil for children. It is found that children with weak memory benefit by taking fish oil supplements. Short term memory loss decreases a child’s ability to remember information about important events. This can also affect his ability to learn new things. However, research has shown that a diet that includes fish can increase memory function in children. In fact, fish oil is a boon for children with memory problems.

Relieves Symptoms of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
Fish oil is another non-drug treatment that has shown promising results to reduce ADHD symptoms. Also referred as attention deficit disorder, a child diagnosed with ADHD shows acute lack of inattentiveness while studying or performing any activity. This is a behavioral disorder in which the children are hyperactive and find it difficult to focus, while performing any task. Trouble in focusing can lead to learning disability, thus affecting their ability to succeed in life. However, fish oil has emerged as a ray of hope for children with ADHD. A study was conducted to verify whether fish oil could curb ADHD symptoms. For a stipulated period of 3 months, school going children were put on fish oil supplements that were high in omega – 3 essential fatty acids. Results were encouraging, as the children displayed better sustained attention while doing any task. Also, there was a significant positive change in their behavior and learning skills. Read more on ADHD diet for children.

Improves Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a disorder that interferes with the child’s intellectual ability. This learning disorder, considerably restricts a child’s ability to read, write and talk properly. Children with dyslexia are unable to spell words correctly in a written text. The good news is that this learning disability can be treated with fish oil for children. Research has found that intake of fish oil capsules can improve reading and writing skills of children with dyslexia.

How Much Fish Oil for Kids?

Considering side effects of fish oil, administering it to children in large doses is not recommended. To reap benefits of fish oil, giving a small dose is a better option to be on the safer side. Depending upon the age of the child, appropriate dosage is given. For instance, children who are less than 3 years of age, the recommended dosage should not be more than 0.8 grams. Children in between 9 to 13 years of age are generally given a small dose of 1.2 grams.

Remember, although fish oil for children has plenty of health benefits, using it as instructed by the health care provider, can go a long way in keeping its side effects at bay. Fish oil overdose can trigger stomach problems in children, so one needs to consult a doctor, to know the correct dosage.

Oral Acne Medication Options

At the onslaught of puberty, many teens suffer from various radical changes – physical, physiological, emotional.. you name it! Of course, one of the most apparent transformations is that of the physical changes. Aside from the males developing more muscles and moustache and females developing their breasts and hips, there’s this one change that commonly annoys an enormous portion of the adolescent population. Acne vulgaris!

Acne vulgaris is also known as acne or pimples in more common terms. Overproduction of oil that suddenly happens to teenagers and sensitivity to dirt are the precursor to this menacing skin disorder. But those two or their combination are not the only cause of breakouts. Many other factors could trigger acne. Genes, weather conditions and certain substances from food may set off the invasion or just the presence of acne.

Dermatologists and researchers have been trying to discover the best acne medication. Acne, no matter how miniscule a disorder it may seem, needs adequate attention. These tiny bumps on one’s face could elicit major effects on a person. Not only vanity motivates experts to find or formulate the most excellent acne medication. Ridicule for having a pockmarked complexion is often one of the leading causes of low self-esteem among adolescents. What’s worse is that this lack of confidence may be brought until one reaches his maturity.

The most recent forms of acne medication are the following:

Oral Antibiotic Acne Medication. This type of medication should always be mediated by consulting a physician. Various acne medication antibiotics that may be taken by mouth are supported by researches. Assorted antibiotics that act as acne medication are intended for moderate, severe to persistent types of acne. It is very important that a doctor is asked first on which antibiotics for acne medication is right for you.

Cortiscosteroids. Very severe acne may be prescribed with this acne medication antibiotic. This potent antibiotic is usually taken in a short span of time only. They have metabolic effects that make them inappropriate for long-term use.

Oral Tetracycline. This antibiotic is one of the most popular oral acne medications. Moderate to severe acne may be treated with an initial dose of 500 to 1000 mg per day in a decreasing dosage as skin condition improvement is noted. This antibiotic is not for the pregnant women since it can cause skeletal defects to fetus. Children with age of under 8 years are also not advised to be given this medication.

Oral Minocycline and Doxycycline. These acne medications in the form of antibiotics are only derived from tetracycline. Research evidences tell that these acne medications are more effective than tetracycline. Doxycycline is reported to induce sunlight sensitivity. Both are advised not to be taken by pregnant women.

Oral Erythromycin. This antibiotic that serve as an acne medication may be taken as an alternative to tetracycline since it is safer for pregnant women and young children.

Isotretinoin. This acne medication antibiotic is said to revolutionize acne treatment due to its potent effect in dealing with severe and treatment-resistant acne. Reports has it that isotretinoin is very effective in treating all forms of acne. But it should be noted that many side affects are also attributed to isotretinoin. This includes severe birth defects to a fetus, dryness of the skin and mucous membranes. Therefore, pregnant women, breastfeeding women or those who are planning to become pregnant must not take isotretinoin as a form of acne medication.

Guidelines For Dealing With Severe Adhd

No pills will be very effective with severe ADHD. If your child has severe ADHD, then it is highly likely that he is almost always unmanageable, disruptive, yells rather than talks and will be totally obnoxious and difficult at school. If there is an element of aggression in his behavior, then this may add to your problems. Hitting and disturbing people while shouting constantly can make life hell for many parents of these children.

At school, apart from having time with the ESE teacher, it is a good idea to talk to the class teacher. An important element is to establish just what type of behavior is causing the problems but if the teacher could make a note of when and why they seem to happen, that can be helpful for both parents and teacher. It could even emerge that the child is only getting attention from the teacher when the bad behavior is present – the child is ignored for the rest of the time.

This problem can be solved by showing the child a behavior chart and dividing it into ten minute blocks so that he see progress when he gets his stars for having done what is expected of him. The chart can include simple things like sitting still at certain times in the lessons, not hitting his peers and so on. He can be rewarded at the end of the day with extra playtime or whatever. Another good idea is to persuade the teacher to let him help her with simple tasks like fetching things or putting things away. Anything which keeps him moving will help reduce hyperactivity and there is even now some research that ADHD kids will perform a series of multiple tasks in rapid succession quite well. Their perception of time is quite different from ours. Similarly for bad behavior, he will have to face the consequences although the emphasis should always be on the good behavior, if possible.

At home parents need to set similar behavior goals of completion of tasks. There is no shouting or yelling and the child knows that you will refuse to talk to him until he talks to you calmly. Just ignore him for the rest of the time, if possible. The child gets fed up with being ignored all the time. This is just one of the techniques you can learn in ADHD behavior therapy. This behavior modification the only effective way to treat severe ADHD and the UK government now subsidises parents to attend these types of courses.

Unfortunately there are children who have already been diagnosed with severe ADHD at the age of three! Experts tell us that it is impossible to diagnose ADHD before the age of five. Some of the guidelines above may help with severe ADHD but it is a fact that parents need help in setting the limits, imposing rewards and consequences and in dealing with temper tantrums. Medication may help to calm the child but the best option is to go for an ADHD homeopathic remedy. You can find out the secret to successful treatment of severe ADHD in the link below.

The Signs And Symptoms In Diagnosing Autism

Autism is a bioneurological disorder characterized by a profound lack of social interaction and language skills. Its more common signs are repetitive motions, ritualistic behaviors that have meaning only for the person with autism, and emotional outbursts.

Diagnosing autism — its signs, symptoms, and treatments –becomes possible within the first three years of life.

The first symptoms parents usually notice often become apparent in infancy. The child fails to make spontaneous eye contact or actively avoids it. He does not respond to his name when it’s spoken aloud and reactions to social stimuli are absent. A prime example of this is not mirroring nonverbal cues like returning a smile when someone smiles at him. Many people with autism, but not all, exhibit a “deadpan” expression. Parents may also notice the child not asking verbally for something he wants. Instead he is more likely to point or use gestures to symbolize his wants.

This disconnection from the people around him leads the autistic child to show little interest in them. This, in turn, means he makes no effort to engage them by pointing out things they like or are interested in and doesn’t understand their emotional responses.
The child with autism displays a large amount of rigidity in his reaction to the world around him. He often has a set of rituals he has created in order to deal with his reality. Any deviation from the rituals or change in his environment can send him into a tantrum, a very strong indicator to parents that something is wrong with their child.

Diagnosing autism — its signs, symptoms, and treatments — is not a simple case of “is-is not.” Symptoms vary widely, so diagnosing autism is often a challenge. The variability makes it necessary to custom-tailor a treatment plan for each patient. Treatments will need to be applied throughout the lifespan of the autistic person, becoming a part of his daily routine.

Occupational and physical therapy are often used in the treatment of autism with good results. Occupation therapy provides training in the activities of daily living like personal grooming and dressing. Physical therapy relaxes tense muscles, allowing the release of pent-up emotions.

Applied behavior analysis deals with the emotional outbursts and rigidity and thus aids in socialization.

Recently, there has been success in nutritional assessment and supplementation in the treatment of autism. The avoidance of casein and some grains, along with dietary supplementation of vitamins A, the B complex, and D show some promise in controlling symptoms.
