High fructose corn syrup
This is a syrup made from corn, not only used in candy, carbonated beverages in more common. In one view, it will increase the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes.U.S. experts believe that from a biochemical point of view, high fructose corn syrup and sucrose are sugar, not much different. American Medical Association recently issued a statement saying there was no sufficient evidence to support “high fructose corn syrup than sugar bad,” the point of view; if eating too much, they will harm the health. In response, FAN Zhi hong explained that in the strict sense, high fructose corn syrup does not count as food additives, in fact, as it is sugar and sugar have calories, but tastes more sweet, as well as water retention, drink this kind of beverage syrup preparation, people hardly full of feeling, unconsciously will drink, which may increase the risk of obesity.
Aspartame (a non sugar sweetener)
It is widely used as a sweetener flavor yogurt, canned fruit, rice puddings, jelly, bread and so on. It has triggered a variety of health concerns, such as cancer, epilepsy, headache, and intellectual influence. But large scale studies have shown that aspartame and these diseases are not directly linked. In the past 23 years, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has confirmed 26 of its security. FAN Zhi hong, said aspartame is 200 times as sweet as sugar, used in the amount of food is minimal, Guer it did not increase in dietary sugar calories.
Sodium benzoate
British food experts believe that drinks containing both sodium benzoate and vitamin C these two components, the possible interaction of form benzene. Benzene is a carcinogen. But this argument has not been unanimous recognition of chemical experts. Sodium benzoate in the human body to its own metabolism, drug free urine through the daily discharge; fact that people every day to enter the body by inhalation of benzene exposure than drinking soft drinks and benzene to more fruit, vegetables and dairy products contain small amounts of benzene ; smoke, automobile exhaust and paint, detergents contain benzene. However, experts advise, sodium benzoate metabolism in the body parts primarily in the liver, the liver function of poor people suggested cutting back on drinks.

If not always, a lot of eating processed meat products, can reduce the intake of sodium nitrite.
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD), also simply known as autism, represents a broad group of learning disability disorders characterized by impaired social interactions, problems with non verbal communications and repetitive behaviors or severely limited activities and interests. Autism is one of the most commonly diagnosed childhood developmental disorders. The symptoms of autism in children usually appear before the child is 3 years old. According to the research by Centers for Disease Control Prevention in 2007, autism affects 1 in every 150 children in the United States. Statistics also show, that autism is three times common in boys than in girls. Read more on facts about autism.
Autism is characterized by three distinctive behaviors. There are certain physical characteristics of children with autism like difficulties with social interaction, display problems with verbal and non verbal communication and exhibition of obsessive interests. These behaviors can range in behavior from mild autism symptoms in children to disabling. As autism varies widely in severity and symptoms of autism in children, it may go unrecognized when debilitating disabilities mask it. In almost 75% of cases of autism, children also have mental retardation and find it difficult to bond with their parents or other family members. Read more on early symptoms of autism.
Autism Symptoms in Children
The signs and symptoms of autism in children, usually become observable in early childhood. Autism includes a wide spectrum of signs and symptoms, though each autistic child will exhibit a unique mixture of these behaviors, from mild autism symptoms to severe ones. The following are symptoms of autism in children:
Difficulty with verbal communication, including problems using and understanding languages
Difficulty with non verbal communication, like gestures and facial expressions
Even when the child has the ability to speak, there is the inability to participate in a conversation
Not able to make friends and preferring to play alone
Finds it difficult to socially interact and relate to people, and to his or her surroundings
Unique and unusual ways of playing with toys, like lining them only in a particular way
Not capable of imagining
Unable to adjust to changes in routine and unreasonable insistence on following the regular routine in detail
Obsession with unusual objects or parts of objects
Repetitive body movements or patterns of behavior like hand clapping, head banging or spinning
However, each child develops at their own pace, some may develop quickly than the other so, you should consider an evaluation for autism if any of the following autism symptoms in infants are seen:
The child avoids eye contact as much as possible
The child does not babble or coo by the time he or she is one year old
The child does not gesture in any form of a point or wave by the time he or she reaches the age of one year
The child does not start saying single words by the age of 16 months
The child does not start saying two word phrases by the age of 2 years
The child has lost all social skills
Diagnosis of Autism
Diagnosis of autism is based on standardized testing, plus a clinical evaluation by an autism specialist. These professionals are usually psychologists, psychiatrists, developmental pediatricians, pediatric neurologists or medical geneticists.
The diagnosis of autism is made when there are a specific number of symptoms as defined by the Diagnostic and Standard Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Some commonly used diagnostic tests are the CARS (Childhood Autism Rating Scale), the ABC (Autism Behavior Checklist) and the GARS (Gilliam Autism Rating Scale). Formal diagnosis by an autism specialist usually depends on completing the ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Scale), and ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised). The CHAT (Checklist for Autism in Toddlers) is often used in pediatrician’s offices to screen for autism symptoms. Also, when physical features, like small head size or brain malformations are present, or there is a family history of relatives with autism, genetic testing such as chromosome analysis and single-gene testing is done.
Autism Treatments
Though, autism is a disorder that does not have a fool proof treatment plan and cure, there are autism treatments available to bring about marked improvement. There are a number of special therapies and behavioral interventions that target the development of language and social skills. Also, there are a lot of support groups available for family members to help understand and cope with their autistic children. But most of all parents need to provide love and support to the child.
These were the symptoms of autism in children and the various tests available for its diagnosis, along with the treatment options. Though there is no cure found for autism, there are a lot of therapies and behavioral interventions designed to remedy specific symptoms and bring about substantial improvement. But the best remedy that one can use for an autistic child is to shower him with ample love and affection.
Lately, it seems like “diabetes” is in the news quite often. The definition of the word “diabetes,” according to Webster’s New World Dictionary, is a disease caused by an insulin deficiency and characterized by excess sugar in the blood and urine.
According to the International Diabetes Federation, more than 230 million people worldwide have diabetes. To me, this is not a statistic! The number 230 million are children and adults. These are all special people who deserve to live a happy and healthy life! They are family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and even your pets. Yes, dogs and cats are getting diabetes. Diabetes is a deadly disease and the main goal is to kill victims. Sometimes, it kills them quickly and other times it’s a slow process from the complications. Diabetes doesn’t care who you are, the objective is to destroy lives.
Why then do we focus on a “deadly disease,” worse yet, the “diabetic label?” What is the “diabetic label?” It’s the label the medical profession, media and society as a whole are using. In fact, many family members and friends use it and don’t even realize it. When you call someone a “diabetic” you are calling them a deadly disease. They are a special person and deserve to be called by their name. The name they choose, not a disease you label them with. When you use the word “diabetic” you are not only being disrespectful to that individual, but you are causing emotional damage. Damage you don’t even see. This damage starts to affect the individual not only mentally but physically as well. I have witnessed it for over 25 years now.
I buried the “diabetic label” in 1979 and refuse to ever use it! Recently, I was at my book signing, when a lady came over to me and said, “My doctor called me a ‘sick diabetic’ and I’m so devastated, can you please help me?” She was in tears! I was angry at her doctor. Why did he/she have to label her? This is the emotional/mental abuse that has been going on for a long time. It’s just no one wants to talk about it. Well, I’m not talking about it either. I’m screaming at the top of my lungs about it. The “diabetic label” needs to be banned! Don’t ever use it around me, or you will be sorry! I’m here representing every single child and adult who has ever had to deal with the “diabetic label.” I care about you and I know what it feels like to be labeled a “diabetic.” If you are reading this and have diabetes or any other health challenge (that you have been labeled with) you totally understand. I’m here to protect you and all of my clients from this abuse. Enough is enough! Need I say more?
I just finished reading a New York Times article titled, “Looking Past Blood Sugar to Survive With Diabetes,” dated August 20, 2007 (available at http://www.nytimes.com archives by searching by title; registration is required). The article was written by Gina Kolata. This article states, “Mr. Smith has Type 2 diabetes and has become fixated on his blood sugar. He tried to control his diabetes but last year he had a life-threatening heart attack.” Diabetes cannot be controlled, beat or managed. Just try chasing after it and soon you will become not only mentally exhausted but physically too. “Mr. Smith was unaware that diabetes can affect the heart,” the article added.
The article continues, “Most people who have diabetes are treated by primary doctors who had just a few hours of instruction on diabetes, while they were in medical school. Then the doctors typically spend just 10 minutes with diabetes patients, far too little for such a complex disease, specialists say.” I totally agree!
Dr. Michael Brownlee, director of the JDRF International Center for Diabetes Complications Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York states, “It makes me ask, what is going on? I can only conclude that people are not aware of their risks and what could be done about them.” My response to Dr. Michael Brownlee: we need to stop focusing on the diseases and what we don’t want. Instead, bury diabetes and start living a healthy lifestyle! Wanna bury diabetes … who ya gonna call? Julie, that’s me – the diabetes buster!

The word Dyscalculia is a combination of the Greek dys which means badly and the Latin verb calculere which means to count.
Dyscalculia is a condition where a person has difficulty in comprehending mathematics. It is a fundamental inability to understand numbers as abstract concepts of comparative quantities. It is also explained to be the non-understanding of what is called as the number sense.
This disability occurs in people across all IQ ranges and is also referred to as Arithmetic Difficulties or AD. The patients who suffer from Dyscalculia often also have trouble with measurement of time and spatial reasoning.
Dyscalculia can be diagnosed at a young age. The measures taken to ease the problems include a different style of teaching mathematics to these students.
The symptoms of Dyscalculia are:
Difficulties understanding the mathematical operators such as the plus, minus, multiplication and division symbols.
Confusing S with 5 or inability to distinguish between an O and a zero (0).
Difficulty in telling which of two given integers is larger from the other.
Difficulty in checking change, balancing checkbooks, budgeting and mental arithmetic.
Difficulty in reading analog clocks.
Difficulty in conceptualizing time and inability to judge the passing of time.
Problems with left and right and inability to judge directions such as north, south, east and west even with the help of a compass. This may cause difficulty in reading and understanding maps.
Inability to keep score during games.
Rotating numbers. For example, 36 may become 63.
Difficulty in athletic co-ordination such as in dance steps, or aerobic exercises.
The probable causes of Dyscalculia are:
Although a lot of research has been conducted to find out the reasons for this disorder, no cause has been identified for Dyscalculia. However, the research does point out that Dyscalculia has its origins in lesions to the area between the junction of the temporal and parietal lobes of the cerebral cortex. There have also been indications that this may be a congenital or a hereditary disease, but there is no concrete evidence to support these indications.
Whatever the cause of this disorder, it is most certainly something that the patient can learn to handle. With the right kind of teaching, the person suffering from Dyscalculia can learn how to cope with the problem and tackle these basic tasks efficiently and effectively.
NeuroStar TMS Therapy is a relatively new technology that was developed for the treatment of people suffering from depression. Depression is a condition that has been around for centuries, and more people suffer from it than it realized. This condition stems from a variety of reasons, some of which may not be as well, depending on the nature of the case.
One thing is clear: depression is not just something that people can “get away”. In fact, despite the many factors that cause depression, a common belief that depression is linked to physical changes in the brain. Levels of chemicals in the brain and their imbalance leads to bouts of depression.
Anyone can become depressed. Age, race and gender may influence the risk factors, but in general, there is no way to say that one is safe from this disease. Statistics show that women are twice as likely to be depressed than men. Older people are also more susceptible to become depressed.
Over the years, various procedures have been developed to treat depression. Perhaps the most popular and basic treatment drugs. Antidepressant prescribed by qualified medical professionals, and they are working to change the chemical levels in the brain. It is important to remember about these treatments is that they take some time to work – the consequences may not manifest until weeks after the start of treatment. Moreover, they have some side effects.
Breakthrough in the treatment of depression NeuroStar transcranial magnetic stimulation. This treatment does not use any oral medication and are not subject to involve invasive surgery. In fact, this depression treatments touted as easily as with his teeth cleaned the dentist!
How it works Transcranical magnetic stimulation, or TMS, works by sending pulses of magnetic energy in the brain. These pulses are very short, and they are sent repeatedly. The aim is to stimulate nerve cells in the brain area that controls the mood of the patient. The end result is simple: fire nerve cells (or transmit signals), which led to chemical changes in levels.
TMS Therapy has existed since 1985, but that was until recently did not give seal of approval for technology that will be used to treat depression. Today, TMS Therapy is a widely accepted method of treatment of depression. There are certain requirements for those wishing to undergo this treatment, but one important consideration is that the only people who received antidepressants and unhelpful may apply TMS therapy.
Centers offer a TMS treatment can be found all over the country. In Long Island, there are sites that specialize in treatment TMS. Dubbed neurostar TMS Long Island, the Center has years of experience behind her, and offers this non-invasive treatment without the risk of side effects associated with antidepressants. If you are looking for alternative methods of treatment of depression, Long Island, then the TMS Center of Long Island is the first choice.
Dr. Andrew Kent now offers the first Long Island, New York TMS Therapy. TMS Therapy is a safe and effective treatment for depression. Dr. Kent specializes in the clinical delivery of this treatment through its NeuroStar TMS Therapy System.

ADHD IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a behavioral disorder that is being more recognized in adults and not just children and adolescents. I was diagnosed in the early 80’s as having ADHD and this disorder continued on through my adulthood. ADHD is the single most common chronic behavioral disorder in preadolescent children. Reported rates range widely from 5% to 12% depending on study methodology and population. ADHD is more common in boys than in girls, with male to female sex ratios ranging from 5:1 for the predominantly hyperactive impulse type and 2:1 for the predominantly inattentive type. (Diagnosis & Treatment in Psychiatry, pg. 577) As having this at an early age and having this condition in kindergarten, things were very bad. I could not explain the energy I was having, and not only this, but trying to sit and listen was also very difficult. Concentration was lost and almost inadequate for me. I wasn’t trying to disrupt my class with the bouncing, fidgeting, and moving around, but because of the lack of knowledge and understanding of this disorder from teachers, I was labeled as a “problem child”. Later on in life, they started noticing symptoms. There are three symptoms that can be broken down into three subtypes, which are: an inattentive type (inability to pay attention), hyperactive impulse type (fidgeting or squirming), and a combined type, which involves a combination of the other two types and is the most common. (Kids Health) Around the time when I was about 6 years old, I was given a prescribed medication called Ritalin, which is a central nervous system stimulant. At that time it was the newest drug out there that appeared to be working on children showing symptoms of ADHD. Now, while it did calm me down, I started noticing that my demeanor started to change. I was feeling more anxious, jittery, and at times, slightly depressed. But the biggest thing for me was I was extremely irritable. My neighborhood friends began to distance themselves from me and soon I felt alone, and in a way at times, that seemed okay with me. Not only did it affect me at home, but also at school. During school, the teachers did notice a change in me, but they also noticed that I became upset much easier. After years of trying to explain to family and teachers that this medication made me feel like I was crazy, I finally took myself off of it at the age of fourteen. I tried other medications, but they had a reverse effect on me. Back then, researchers did not recognize the similarity feature, such as comorbidities, neuropsychological deficits, and failures in major life domains. (Brain Function and Structure pg. 323) In the 1970’s, studies were conducted on the neuropsychological functioning of children, age group of under 12, with ADHD. Studies now show that children through the age of 19 show that the right hemisphere of the brain is 3% to 5% smaller. (Brain Function and Structure pg. 327) Researchers are indicating that subjects with ADHD comorbid LDs are at approximately 30%, because LDs such as dyslexia involve brain abnormalities. It’s necessary to know which abnormalities are caused by ADHD and which are caused by LDs. An MRI study found that both dyslexic and ADHD children had smaller right anterior width measurements than did controls. (Brain Structure and Function pg. 332)
Diagnosis across the age group is a clinical process. Biological tests and psychometric instruments are not currently available, but the DSMIV-TR has a criterion for ADHD. There is a set of 18 criteria’s for ADHD, nine are inattention and nine are hyperactivity – impulsivity symptoms. The person must display two distinct settings, six of the nine must be hyperactivity –impulsivity and six of the nine must be inattention symptoms. They must also display these symptoms for 6 months to qualify for a diagnosis. Some of these symptoms must be presented before the age of 7. ADHD is typically a lifelong disorder. It is important to understand the pattern of symptoms and impairments in all groups. (ADHD in Children, Adolescents, and Adults pg. 322) Hyperactivity in adults is frequently manifested as adaptive behaviors rather than observed behaviors. For instance, I would hate going to the local movie theater because I would try to avoid settings where there was a long period of silence or sitting. I always have to be doing something; I never slow down. You could say my throttle was stuck in “rabbit gear”. Because of this hyperactivity, it has caused a lot of tension with family members and in my relationship. In my teenage years, it had gotten worse and because of my impulsivity, I had
Before discussing further and going into the different levels of autism, let us get a brief idea of what is autism.
What is Autism?
Autism is a kind of psychological ailment that affects the functioning of the brain and reduces a child’s power of self control. The child may show problems in communication, withdrawal from human contact, ritualistic behaviors, and wont have too many interests. It affects three times as many boys as girls, and is not a progressive disorder that worsens as the child grows bigger. Though its cause is unknown, it is believed to be hereditary. Some of the common symptoms observed in the child suffering from autism are:
Repeated body movements like hand flapping, spinning objects, etc.
Difficulty in making and maintaining eye contact.
Walking on one’s toes.
Hyper sensitivity in one or more of the five senses.
Echolalia, i.e. repeating other person’s words like an echo.
Deficits in verbal and non-verbal communications.
Insensitivity to pain and no apparent fear of real danger.
Different Levels of Autism
Following are the different levels of autism, that help in analyzing the severity of this disorder.
Classical Autism
The symptoms of classical autism are usually recognized by the time child reaches three years of age. Once diagnosed, there are different methods that can be used to treat the disorder. Diet changes and proper care have been quite successful in treating classical autism.
Asperger Syndrome
Children suffering from Asperger syndrome are able to attend school, work in offices and live a normal life. They are considered to be highly functioning and may be extremely talented in distinct fields like arts, music, drama, etc. The most common problem associated with this condition include social and communication skills as the children may struggle in establishing relationships with their compeers. They may have speech difficulties and often experience problems in distinguishing literal and figurative statements.
Kanner’s Syndrome
Kanner’s syndrome is also known as early infantile autism which occurs before the age of three, and has typical autism symptoms. The child may appear unaware of his surroundings and may focus particularly on one or two objects only. He may be unable to make eye contact with people around him and may not respond to standard communication efforts.
Rett Syndrome
Rett syndrome is mainly associated with females, as in males the syndrome dies before birth or shortly after. Initially, the child development or growth is normal, but after 16 to 18 months the development appears to reverse. Children may start losing control over their hands and feet, and their motor skills may also revert. Speech delays or a loss of verbal skills are the commonly observed symptoms in girls.
Childhood Disintegrative Disorder
The symptoms of childhood disintegrative disorder (CDD) are usually observed between the year of two and four. The condition leads to disintegration of physical, verbal, mental and social abilities. The child may withdraw from his normal behavior and lose the ability to communicate with people around him.
Pervasive Disintegrative Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS)
A diagnosis of the PDD is primarily made when the symptoms do not fall within any of the existing specific categories of autism. The typical symptoms include difficulty in interacting socially and problems communicating with others.
Hence, understanding the different levels of autism will help in diagnosing and treating the disorder properly. If diagnosed early, autism can be treated and some characteristics can be lessened or even eliminated. The treatment programs mainly concentrate on the child’s communication skills, teaching functional living skills and implementing parent and staff training.
