There was no such thing until it was realized that this type of behavior was worth making money from with the sale of PILLS. The comment from "Former Redskins Fan" is the BEST answer I have read, but I would like to also add MERCURY/AMALGAM poisoning and the fact that people feed their kids BAD FOOD..Food loaded with preservatives and they expect them to act fine? THEY LOAD THEM UP ON SUGARY CEREALS and off to school and behave they tell them? lololol.....Change diet, omit all sugar, omit all fake sugar i,e splenda, sucralose,aspartame...remove amalgams and follow Dr. Andrew Hall Cutlers protocol to remove any metals. All other FAIL..and actually do more harm than good...

Ashley -
ADHD is very much a real disorder. Some people believe it is over-diagnosed because of the recent surge in research and studies of the disorder. According to the National Institute Of Mental Health - ADHD is NOT over-diagnosed, and in fact is reportedly under-diagnosed and under-treated.
That being said - ADHD has received a lot of negative attention because of the pharmaceutical companies and what seems like a big push on medications. While I can appreciate that view, it simply is what it is and instead of blaming them - we need more people to become informed and educated about ADHD.
As a therapist who works with children diagnosed with ADHD, I can tell you that it is real. I do see some children who I believe are not diagnosed properly, but diagnosing children (young children in particular) can be very challenging. You see, there are many disorders and problems that mimic symptoms of ADHD.
On top of that, ADHD has received so much public attention that many people believe they know enough about it to make decisions and suggestions about who has it and who does not.
Well, hope that helps.

Read the Nerves In Collision book by Walter C. Alvarez, M.D., the How To Cure Hyperactivity book (1981) about ADHD by C. Thomas Wild with Anita Uhl Brothers, M.D., and the A Remarkable Medicine Has Been Overlooked book by Jack Dreyfus. ADHD - ADD - Hyperactivity is real but overdiagnosed today, year 2008. Good luck.

I think there are three leading causes:
1. Broken Homes or stress at home. A child may act out more because it's a cry for something they are missing in their lives. More and more the neuclear family is proving to be the best to raise a child in, but parents who have a strained, abusive, or detrimental relationship will be a contributing factor as well.
2. TV as a baby sitter. The constant barrage of stimuli found on TV is causing short attention spans and imediate gratification prone children in society. Therefore when the child is faced with a structural and process institution such as a formal classroom the stimuli is not fast or instant enough and the child acts out out of sheer boredom.
3. Chemical and biological contributions might cause ADD. Sometimes the first two contributions can be ruled out and the only answer is then an actual biological or chemical imbalance causing ADD/ADHD. The source of the chemical or biological imbalances arn't yet known.
In summery I do think it's overdiagnosed, but I do think it exists. I am not diagnosed with it. I think if our health care was set up better to treat the cause rather than the effect it would go a long way in decreasing the diagnoses of ADD/ADHD

I've treated many adults with ADD. In children, I believe it is over-diagnosed, but many of the adults I treated were being treated with anti-depressants or anti-anxiety drugs, or both because they were misdiagnosed. If you would like to view SPECT images of ADD, go to BrainPlace.com and look at Dr. Amen's work with different disorders.

I know that it is hereditary. I also know that many parents try and medicate this condition so that the child is easily handled. I think that the parents should be medicated and leave the child alone. My son is ADHD he is 30, when he was 2 they tried to medicate him and I stopped the medication after 2 days. He is a healthy 30 year old with 3 degrees. He chooses to teach children because he loves the kids so much. He struggled at times, however, he learned to deal with his disability.

I think it exists and at the same time it is overdiagnosed. I think the patient's whole situtation needs to be looked at before a diagnosis can be reached. Its hard to diagnose kids because they are incapable of voicing how they feel in a way that we can understand.
